How Toastmasters Has Changed My Life
By: Sylma Jepin, ACS ALB – DIVISION K DIRECTOR
“If someone offers you an amazing opportunity, but you are not sure you can do it, say YES then learn how to do it later”- Richard Branson
Yes, by saying yes first to becoming a Toastmasters member, it has opened up a lot of opportunities for me. But most importantly, it has built my self confidence and self growth, both in communication and leadership skills.
Three years ago, I was invited as a guest to Kota Kinabalu Advanced Toastmasters Club meeting. I was extremely impressed by the quality of the meeting that I signed up as a member immediately that evening itself and since then has never regretted that decision.
This organisation has given me opportunity to meet and make new friends, some if not most, will be for life. Most importantly, this organisation has given me hope and leadership opportunities that I have never imagined myself doing three years ago.
9 months after being a member, I was installed as the 16th president of Kota Kinabalu Advanced Toastmasters Club (2016/2017). It was definitely a learning curve for me. That presidency term became my foundation in my Toastmasters journey. Everything that I have learned in that term, I brought it with me when I served as Area Director (2017/2018); and until now as I am serving as the Division K Director.
Toastmasters International is truly an organisation “Where Leaders Are Made”.
These leadership opportunities has opened up a side of me that I have never thought I was capable of; and to think that all of these happened simply by uttering one simple word “YES”.
